Changes to car parking facilities
On occasion changes to car parking facilities are required. Details of all car parking facilities are available here.
Night works
To ensure our train service continues to run we need to carry out regular maintenance and improvement works on and around our tracks. Some work can be done during the day, but often work can only be completed safely when the train service is not running. This means we work overnight and during planned line closures.
The type of work taking place includes inspections, patrolling the tracks, lineside management, maintenance and renewal work and cleaning. Sometimes the work generates noise which residents or businesses near to the Metro line may be able to hear.
9 June Trains will be busier than usual
Trains will be busier than usual on Tuesday 9 June as Take That are in concert at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. If you are travelling please leave extra time for your journey.
If you are going to the concert, see our travel advice here.
Station Updates & Safety Information
Callerton Parkway car park ticket machines
Due to an ongoing issue the ticket machines at Callerton Parkway are not accepting coins. Customers are advised while repairs are taking place to use the Pay By Phone feature instead, instructions which can be found on the side of the machines.
Sunderland Station
Due to a technical issue, platform displays at Sunderland station are currently showing incorrect information. Trains are running to all destinations today. Please check the 'Track your Metro' feature on our Pop App for live train arrival information at Sunderland station.
Northumberland Park Car Park:
There is a temporary reduction in spaces available at Northumberland Park Car Park while we carry out repairs due to intentional damage to maintain a safe environment.
E-scooters:
E-scooters are not permitted on our network including trains, stations, and platforms. They pose a potential fire/smoke risk due to faulty lithium-ion batteries, which could cause harm to both customers and staff.
Bikes on Metro:
Do you travel on Metro with your bike? Please plan your journey in advance as some time and location restrictions are in place. Please remember, priority must always be given to wheelchair users and customers with pushchairs. Full details can be found here: https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro/useful-information/bikes-scooters-metro
Antisocial Behaviour Reporting:
Did you know you can now report low level anti social behaviour through the Pop App?
When you’re travelling on Metro and witness something that needs reporting—such as vaping, smoking, intoxication, harassment, or disorder—simply tap ‘Report’, select ‘Report a non emergency’, and choose your preferred reporting channel.
To help us respond effectively, please include:
• your location or direction of travel,
• the activity taking place, and
• a description of those involved.
Save the number in your phone so you can easily report issues in the future.
Operation Coastwatch:
Northumbria Police’s Operation Coastwatch is working in partnership with North Tyneside Council and Nexus to increase patrols across Metro stations, beaches, and parks. If you need to report a concern, you can contact the police online, call 101, or send a WhatsApp or SMS message to 07345 222 710, including clear details of the location and what is happening.
Take That at the Stadium of Light
On 9 June trains will be busier than usual due to the concert. Please plan your journey in advance and leave extra time for travel.
Eldon Square bus station closure for resurfacing: Wednesday 10 June – Sunday 28 June
From Wednesday 10 June 2026 until Sunday 28 June 2026, Eldon Square Bus Station will be fully closed for three weeks to allow resurfacing works, new road markings and improvements to drainage and guardrails to be completed. The station will reopen to all buses on Monday 29 June 2026.
The bus station will remain open as a thoroughfare, however no buses will serve it during the improvement works.
Nexus, bus operators and Newcastle City Council have worked in partnership to try and reduce the disruption caused to the public during this period. The works have been programmed during the football off-season, and away from other big events in the city to minimise the chance of the bus station works clashing with other necessary diversions.
Services will be utilising alternative stops during the closure, as follows:
Go North North (GNE), Stagecoach North East (SNE), Arriva North East (ANE), Peter Hogg (PH)
49 (SNE), 74 (GNE) and X47(SNE) – Stand Y, Haymarket Bus Station
X74 (PH), X77 (SNE), X78 (SNE), X79(SNE), X87/X88 (SNE) – Stand X, Haymarket Bus Station
684 (GNE), 685 (SNE), X82 (SNE), X85(GNE) – Southbound Percy Street stop outside of Eldon Square bus station exit
(GNE) 6, 47, X45 – Northbound Newgate Street stop outside St Andrew’s Church NG2
21, 22, 28, 28B, 29 (GNE), X12(ANE) and X21(GNE) – Southbound Newgate Street stop opposite St Andrew’s Church NG3
(GNE) 10, 10a, 10b, 12 – Northbound Newgate Street stop, outside Premier Inn at The Gate NG1
(GNE) X1, X1a, X1b, X10 – Southbound opposite The Gate NG4
(GNE) X30, X31, X32, X70, X71, X72 and X73 – Southbound Newgate Street stop, opposite Maldron Hotel NG5
At Haymarket Bus Station service X46 (Gateshead Central Taxi) will temporarily use Stand R and services 355/356 will temporarily use Stand P.
During the closure, Stagecoach services 685 and X82 will also be unable to serve the stop on Gallowgate heading into Newcastle.
Extra information will be on display in Eldon Square bus station including maps highlighting the temporary stopping arrangements along with signage on Newgate Street. Please consider allowing extra time when connecting between services due to these changes.
Shields Ferry temporary daytime-only timetable
The Shields Ferry will operate a temporary timetable from Monday, 25 May, due to crew sickness.
The temporary timetable changes mean that, Monday to Saturday, the first crossing of the day from South Shields will be at 7.15am instead of 6.45am, and the last crossing from North Shields will be at 6.30pm.
The later crossings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when we usually operate until 10.50pm, will not be running until further notice.
Our focus is to ensure we protect our core service, when it is busiest, avoiding any short notice service suspensions.
What happens when the Shields Ferry is not operating
If we are unable to operate the ferry crossing between North Shields and South Shields because of eg severe fog, stormy conditions on the river, or if there is a technical issue with the vessels, we will endeavour to provide a replacement bus where possible.
Replacement bus timetable (subject to any buses being available)
The buses run on the hour and half past the hour from each ferry landing.
| South Shields to North Shields | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Days | First bus | Then these times every hour | Until last bus |
| Monday to Wednesday | 06:30 | 00, 30 | 20:00 |
| Thursday to Saturday | 06:30 | 00, 30 | 23:00 |
| Sunday | 10:00 | 00, 30 | 18:00 |
| North Shields to South Shields | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Days | First bus | Then these times every hour | Until last bus |
| Monday to Wednesday | 06:30 | 00, 30 | 20:00 |
| Thursday to Saturday | 06:30 | 00, 30 | 23:00 |
| Sunday | 10:00 | 00, 30 | 18:00 |
Please note that these are the same as the normal ferry times from North Shields, but are not the same as the normal ferry times from South Shields. This is of course because the replacement bus service takes longer than the ferry to travel between the two landings via the Tyne Tunnel.
From South Shields the buses depart from the bus stop on Ferry Street, outside the former BT building, stop number 42S32.
From North Shields the buses depart from the bus stop on North Quay at the end of the ferry landing, stop number 41080. It will also stop on request at the bus stop at the top of Borough Road.
Bikes
Unfortunately, bikes are not allowed on these buses. We suggest cyclists use the Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel instead.
More information
The ferry crew will be on the South Shields landing to provide passengers with information during the period of the disruption.
