Way to travel rail

Travelling by rail

Enjoy travelling by train across the North East and beyond.

Whether you’re commuting daily or visiting the coastal towns of the North East, here’s everything you need to plan journeys and buy the right train tickets.

Rail services

Travelling by rail in the North East is convenient, well-connected, and always improving.

Northern trains link Newcastle, Sunderland and Ashington, providing convenient access to towns within Northumberland, County Durham and beyond.

Services from Northern are integrated with the Tyne and Wear Metro system, meaning those outside of Tyne and Wear can now more easily access Metro stations. For example, Sunderland, Heworth, Northumberland Park and Central Station can all be reached by both Northern trains and using Metro for onward journeys.

Regular services between cities make it easy to reach destinations across the UK, with frequent connections to London King’s Cross, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Carlisle, Leeds and Manchester.
