Adults can now travel across the North East with cheaper single tickets.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has extended the £2.50 adult bus fare cap, until at least March 2027. The cap was introduced in January 2025 and saves passengers at least 50p on every journey compared to the Government's £3 limit. Adult single bus fares in the North East now range from £1.60 to £2.50 single as a result of the decision, with commercial operators deciding their own prices for shorter journeys below the cap. To make sure you always get the correct single ticket price please state your destination to the driver when boarding. Remember, if you are expecting to use more than one bus on the day then a day ticket may give better value.
Get Round for a Pound
The Mayor and North East Combined Authority cabinet have also committed to keep the region’s £1 flat fare for passengers aged 21 and under across public transport in March 2026 with the ambition this stays in place across the region until 2028. This new fare cap will be subsidised locally by the Combined Authority and is aimed at keeping the cost of travel as low as possible.

Information for those 21 and under using the ‘Get Round for a Pound’ tickets on buses.
In County Durham and Northumberland this will usually be the cheapest fare available for children, although some specific services might have cheaper fares such as the Durham Cathedral buses 40, 40A, 40C.
In Tyne and Wear children can travel for 60p single / £1.10 day ticket if they have an Under 16 Pop card but this will usually be the cheapest ticket option if your child does not have an Under 16 Pop card.
Under 5s always travel for free.

This will vary depending on your travel plans and the number of buses and other modes of transport you will use.
Some operators no longer sell return tickets but offer their own day tickets which may be cheaper if your journeys will only be on that operator’s buses and within its validity zone.
If your journeys include more than one operator, transport mode, or you need a wider geographical validity zone then the relevant Day Rover or TNE Day Saver ticket is likely to be the best value.
If you are only going to use one bus each way then your cheapest option will usually to be purchase a single ticket for each journey, this will range from £1.60 with a maximum cap of £2.50 depending on the length of the journey (state your destination to the driver to get the correct single ticket price).
