Access to station
- Station is situated on Station Terrace with separate entrances to each platform.
- Access to Platform 1 is by steps from Birtley Avenue or down the lengthy inclined station approach road from Manor Road. Note that the footway is long and narrow with an uneven surface.
- Car parking operated by Station Developments (a private company) is available outside the station on Platform 1 side only. There are 71 unclassified parking bays and 3 designated accessible bays.
- Access to Platform 2 is directly off Station Terrace.

- This station has a degree of step-free access to the platforms, which may be in both directions or in one direction only.
- Footbridge inside station accessed by stairs at each end.
- Wheelchair users will need to use external roadways via the Manor Road bridge to the north of the station. This route is well signposted but unavoidably lengthy.
